The evolution of the Android platform
Google entered the mobile platform space back in 2007 after it had initially funded and then purchased Android Inc.
Android is based on Linux and is and open source platform. Google founded the Open Handset Alliance with the inclusion of 86 hardware, software and telecommunication companies.
Today, the platform has grown to have a userbase of 400 Million devices. A staggering 1 million Android devices are activated every day.
The Google Android marketplace (Google’s version of the App Store) currently has over 600,000 apps in it’s catalogue.
With a foundation so large it’s a hard platform to ignore, especially with the announcement of the Nexus 7 – Google’s new tablet. Android is certain to surpass the iOS userbase of 410million devices very shortly.

It will be interesting to see the battle between Google, Apple and Microsoft with it’s new operating system Windows 8, will shape up.
